Jurassic 5

Diehard fans were left devastated when legendary hip hop outfit Jurassic 5 disbanded in 2007 citing “musical differences”. Fast forward to 2013 and lovers of 90s hip hop rejoiced when the collective reformed to play The Coachella Music Festival, and followed up with another gritty performance at the UK’s legendary Glastonbury Festival in 2014. Bounce on to March 2015, and it’s the West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots’ turn to be buoyed by the crew’s bouncing beats and tight rhymes. Formed in 1993, rappers Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir and Marc 7 plus DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist rounded out the six piece crew. Quickly carving out a place for themselves on the US West Coast as one of the most soulful and socially aware hip hop groups to emerge from the underground scene in LA, they embodied a fresh new sound which carried its own nostalgia but set a new benchmark for original hip hop. With classics like ‘What’s Golden’, ‘If You Only Knew’, ‘High Fidelity’, ‘Thin Line’ and ‘Freedom’ among their repertoire, and a sold-out 2014 tour behind them, Jurassic 5 are well and truly back on the hip hop scene. They’ve even released a new, post reunion song, ‘The Way We Do It’, sampling the White Stripes’ ‘My Doorbell’ single, and featuring production from the late Heavy D. J5 are one act not to miss at West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots in 2015.
