Mavis Staples

The 2015 West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots wouldn’t be complete without a Queen of Soul, and we’ve sure got a beauty for you. She’s one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, a Grammy Award winner and a living legend…yep, Mavis Staples is the real deal! Last appearing on the West Coast Blues ‘n’ Roots stage in 2011, the renowned soul and gospel singer has a whole new selection of hits from her acclaimed 2013 album One True Vine. Prepare to sing your rhythm and blues lungs out to ‘Respect Yourself’, ‘Take you There’, ‘People, My People’, ‘Have a Little Faith’ and ‘Eyes on the Prize’. An actress, singer and civil rights activist, Mavis’ songs and those of her family group, the rather unoriginally named The Staple Singers, were the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement in America. Scoring their first hit with ‘Uncloudy Day’ in 1956, the group’s activism kicked off because Mavis’ papa, Pop Staples, was friends with the movement’s father – none other than Martin ‘I have a dream’ Luther King Jr. With a career spanning almost 65 years, Mavis will be bringing the soul to Fremantle Park. But did you know she once touched the soul of another music legend? Yep, the one and only Bob Dylan asked for her hand in marriage! We sure are glad she accepted our proposal because we can’t wait to have her back in 2015!
